🌍 Discover the Science of Love and Connection: the Power of Polyvagal Theory at the ETPA Annual Conference in Berlin

We are excited to announce a special 2h experiential workshop titled “The Art of Human Connection: Polyvagal Theory in Love and Sexuality” taking place on October 5-6, 2024, as part of the annual ETPA Conference in Berlin. This workshop is designed to deepen your understanding of the physiological and psychological mechanisms that underlie our most intimate relationships.

Why Attend?

In a world where relationships are increasingly complex, understanding the science behind human connection can provide profound insights into how we engage with others—particularly in the realms of love and intimacy. The polyvagal theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges in 1994, offers a revolutionary perspective on how our autonomic nervous system (ANS) influences our emotions, behaviors, and relationships. It’s more than just a theory; it’s a roadmap for creating and sustaining meaningful connections.

This workshop, led by Viorel Pasca , PhD, along with psychotherapists Livia Istrate and Alina Anghel , offers a rare opportunity to explore these concepts through a fully experiential approach. Unlike traditional workshops, this session will be conducted without chairs, on the floor, and in constant motion, emphasizing embodiment and active participation. Through a combination of meditation, mindfulness, body techniques, dance, and movement, participants will experience firsthand the dynamics of the autonomic nervous system and its role in fostering a sense of safety and connection.

What Will You Learn?

Participants will delve into the core principles of polyvagal theory, focusing on three fundamental concepts:

  1. Neuroception – the unconscious process by which our nervous system evaluates the environment and determines whether it is safe, dangerous, or life-threatening.
  2. Autonomic Hierarchy – the organization of the ANS into three states: social engagement (safe), fight/flight (danger), and shutdown (life-threatening).
  3. Coregulation – Human Connection and Safety – how the feeling of safety, mediated by the ANS, influences our ability to connect, love, and build intimate relationships.

Understanding these principles provides a new lens through which to view relationship dynamics. Whether you are a therapist, coach, or simply someone interested in deepening your relationships, this workshop will offer valuable tools and insights.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is ideal for:

  • Psychotherapists and counselors who want to incorporate polyvagal principles into their practice.
  • Relationship coaches looking for innovative approaches to enhancing connection between partners.
  • Individuals and couples seeking a deeper understanding of how safety and physiological states influence love and intimacy.
  • Mindfulness practitioners interested in the intersection between body, mind, and social behavior.

Dr. Viorel Pasca ’s research interests include the application of polyvagal theory, neuroscience, attachment theory, and mindfulness in clinical settings. His approach integrates body-based psychotherapies with traditional talk therapies, offering a holistic model that addresses both emotional and physiological aspects of the human experience. He is joined by his valued colleagues, Livia Istrate and Alina Anghel , both accomplished integrative psychotherapists with a strong focus on the application of polyvagal theory in therapy.

What to Expect:

This workshop is not just about learning; it’s about experiencing. Participants will:

  • Engage in guided meditation and mindfulness exercises that illustrate how the ANS responds to different emotional states.
  • Explore body techniques and movement exercises designed to foster a sense of safety and connection.
  • Participate in discussions on how these experiences translate into real-world applications, particularly in the context of romantic relationships and sexual intimacy.

! Given the experiential nature of this workshop, we recommend wearing comfortable or even athletic attire to fully participate in the activities. The session will be dynamic, hands-on, and conducted on the floor—perfect for those ready to step out of their comfort zone and into a space of embodied learning.
